A certain style of dress comes to mind when you think of Burlesque... Corsets, red lipstick, and  sexy black lace....The black lace is what pulls this whole look together! And what did the famous burlesque stars of the 40s and 50s use to trim their slips, and corsets?? Why Chantilly Lace of course! What is Chantilly lace? Chantilly lace is black cotton lace that usually has a large floral motif going all around it. Chantilly lace was very popular in the Victorian era... It is expensive and hard to find now, and not as good as the Chantilly Lace of the Victorian era... The burlesque dancers had instant access to black Chantilly lace because their grandmothers were young women in the Victorian era... Don't you wish you could knock on your grandmothers door for antique trims and laces now?? Maybe some of you can! But my great grandparents are deceased unfortunately.. I never even got to meet them. Travilla and His Special Client...

I simply had to know who designed Marilyn Monroe's clothes, because back in the golden age of Hollywood each costume designer was under contract to design all of the costumes for a certain star. Then I discovered him! William Travilla originally started out designing costumes for burlesque theater, and then worked his way up to Hollywood. When he got assigned to Ms. Monroe, she was still an unknown starlet. Travilla next to Edith Head is probably one of the luckiest costume designers who ever lived! He certainly made history..In a lot of Marilyn's dresses he put in built in bras so that she looked fabulous!, and boning as well. In the 7 year itch dress the bodice has heavy foundations in it, lots of padding and under wires to hold Marilyn up. lol, Without those foundations Marilyn had fit issues as you can probably imagine. (lol) In her " Happy Birthday Mr. President" Dress. She was literally sewn into that dress! How they pulled that one off I'll never know..Travilla and Marilyn were a design match made in heaven. The perfect dresses for the perfect woman to wear them..

It Girl Designer of the Week: Edith Head

During her long career she was nominated for 35 Oscars, including every year from 1948 through 1966, and won eight times, more Oscars than any other woman has won. She was responsible for some of the best-known Hollywood fashion images of her day, with her costumes being worn by the most glamorous and famous actresses in films. Head's influence on world fashion was far reaching, especially in the 1950s when she began appearing on Art Link Letters television program and writing books on fashion.Head was known for her low-key working style, and unlike many of her male contemporaries usually consulted extensively with the female stars she worked with. As a result she was a favorite designer for several of the leading female stars of the 1940s and 1950's; and was frequently 'loaned' out by Paramount to other studios at the request of their female stars. Go Edith!

Scarlett’s Wedding Night:

It Girls, Let’s Face it, we all want to be Scarlett in some way! Why Not really do it. What better occasion to look like Scarlett in this pic than for your wedding? Or even prom for that matter! Hair & Makeup: Doesn’t her hair look beautiful here? It’s set in beautiful pin curls and just cascades down her shoulders like a goddess. Her makeup is beautiful too. Notice that Scarlett isn’t tan, and she’s gorgeous! You don’t have to be tan to be sexy, girls. If you don’t have a tan it doesn’t mean you look like Casper, I don’t know who invented that saying but obviesouly that person has no idea what their talking about! They’ve never seen Scarlett! How come we don’t wear hair like this on our wedding day? Or prom? Why do we keep on looking like clowns with bright pink lip gloss & heavy blue & green eye shadow, yuck! Natural looking makeup and these adorable curls would do the trick for your wedding or prom and it’s a cheap and easy way to save money instead of going to the salon and dropping all that $.It Girls, Take that extra $ and buy yourself some diamonds. You deserve it!

If you need a pattern there are vintage and antique pattern websites where you could find either a petticoat pattern or a corset pattern, otherwise McCall’s, Vogue, & Butterick have just fine corset patterns. Add some antique lace to your bridal veil as well, or trim your petticoat and corset with some it will truly make a difference in the way it looks.
